The Best Beaches in Lefkada
— The Complete Guide

Lefkada has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. Here is every beach worth knowing — from the famous to the hidden — with practical advice for each one.

Lefkada consistently appears on lists of the best beach destinations in Greece — and with good reason. The west coast delivers the kind of dramatic coastal scenery that genuinely lives up to its photographs: towering white limestone cliffs, long stretches of white pebbles and water in shades of turquoise and deep blue that are unlike almost anywhere else in Europe.

The east coast offers something different — calmer, sheltered bays with warmer water and easier access, ideal for families with young children. Between the two coastlines, Lefkada has a beach for every preference, every age group and every day of a holiday.

This guide covers the beaches worth visiting, what to expect at each one, and the practical information you need to make the most of them.

The West Coast — Lefkada's Famous Beaches

The west coast is what puts Lefkada in the top tier of Greek beach destinations. The combination of white cliffs, fluorescent water and long, undeveloped shoreline is extraordinary — and unlike the more visited Greek islands, it remains relatively uncrowded outside of peak July and August.

Porto Katsiki

The most photographed beach in Lefkada and one of the most recognised in the entire Mediterranean. Sheer white limestone cliffs drop to a crescent of white pebbles and water in a vivid, almost unreal shade of turquoise. A staircase of around 100 steps leads down from the car park (€10 per day), and cafés at the top offer food and drinks with views across the bay.

Best time to visit: Before 10am in July and August. The beach fills quickly once tour boats arrive mid-morning. Early visits also benefit from the cliff face still casting shade across the sand.

Egremni

Two kilometres of white sand and pebbles framed by dramatic cliffs — Egremni is frequently cited as one of the finest beaches in the Mediterranean. The 2015 earthquake destroyed the original staircase access, meaning the beach is now most easily reached by boat from Nidri or Vasiliki. This has kept visitor numbers lower than Porto Katsiki, giving Egremni a wilder, more remote feel that many visitors prefer.

Best time to visit: Any time of day — the beach orientation means it catches sun throughout. Boat trips from Nidri typically depart from 9am.

Kathisma

The most accessible of the west coast beaches and one of the most popular on the island. Golden-white sand, organised sunbeds and umbrellas, beach bars and a lively, social atmosphere. Kathisma is particularly well known for its sunsets — the west-facing position and open horizon make for spectacular late-afternoon light as the sun drops toward the sea.

Best time to visit: Late afternoon into evening for the sunset. Arrive by 5pm in high season to secure sunbeds before the sunset crowds gather.

Quieter AlternativePine TreesSunbeds

Pefkoulia

Just north of Kathisma, Pefkoulia shares the same west coast water quality but attracts fewer visitors. Pine trees line the hillside behind the beach, and the longer stretch of sand means more space even during busy periods. Sunbeds are available, and there is a restaurant close by. A strong choice for those who want organised facilities without peak-season crowding.

Best time to visit: Mornings for the calmest water. Afternoons for the light and views.

Hidden Beaches & Snorkelling Spots

Some of the best swimming in Lefkada happens away from the main tourist beaches. These locations are less well known and, as a result, considerably less crowded — but the water quality and scenery are exceptional.

SnorkellingCliff DivingRock Formations

Kavalikefta & Megali Petra

Two adjoining beaches near Kalamitsi village, connected by a 10-minute walk across the rocks. The rock formations here are remarkable — enormous boulders create natural swim-through passages, underwater caves and clear pools of exceptional depth and clarity. These are among the best snorkelling spots on the island, with visible marine life and dramatic underwater topography. The cliff formations also attract experienced cliff divers.

Practical note: Bring snorkelling equipment, food and water. Facilities are minimal. Footwear for the rock walk is recommended.

QuietClear WaterSnorkelling

Afteli Beach

A small, uncommonly quiet beach with exceptional water clarity. The rocky shoreline provides ideal conditions for snorkelling — visibility is high and fish are abundant in the shallows. Afteli receives far fewer visitors than the main beaches and retains an unspoiled, undeveloped character. Facilities are limited, so bringing provisions is advisable.

Practical note: Best visited on a weekday morning when visitor numbers are lowest.

Boat Access OnlyNo FacilitiesExceptional Water

Mylos Beach

Accessible only by boat from Agios Nikitas, Mylos is one of Lefkada's most unspoiled beaches — a short crossing from the village takes visitors to a sheltered bay with no roads, no cafés and no crowds. The water clarity is exceptional, with visibility to several metres depth even from the surface. Boat crossings run regularly in summer and take approximately 10 minutes.

Practical note: Take everything needed for the day. The lack of facilities is part of what makes the beach special.

Beaches Near Agios Ioannis

For guests staying in the Agios Ioannis area, several excellent beaches are within a short drive — no long journeys required for a morning swim or an afternoon in the sun.

Agios Ioannis Beach

A long, wide beach with turquoise water and a constant breeze that makes it one of the premier windsurfing and kitesurfing locations in the Ionian islands. Several schools offer lessons for all levels. Cafés, restaurants and sunbeds line the beach, and the waterfront is lively throughout the day. The beach is calm and ideal for swimming in the early afternoon when the wind drops slightly.

Very CloseCalm LagoonBest for Young Children

Gyra Beach

A sheltered lagoon beach with unusually calm, warm water — one of the best choices on the island for families with young children. The shallow entry and gentle conditions make it safe and comfortable for all ages. The lagoon setting means the water is warmer than the open sea, and the protected position keeps waves minimal even on windier days.

Planning tip: Lefkada is compact enough to visit a different beach every day of a week-long holiday without significant driving. The west coast beaches take 20–35 minutes from Agios Ioannis. Porto Katsiki and Egremni are best combined into a single day trip, ideally with a boat.
