Lefkada has a distinct character: mountain villages with stone-paved squares and plane trees, a rich olive oil tradition, dramatic inland waterfalls and a food culture that reflects centuries of Ionian history.

A private boat with a local skipper is the single most recommended activity in Lefkada — and consistently the highlight of many visitors' holidays. A full day on the water gives access to beaches that cannot be reached by road, snorkelling stops in secluded coves, and a completely different perspective on the island's coastline. Several operators run full-day cruises from Nidri and Vasiliki to the west coast beaches — Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Agiofylli — with swimming and snorkelling stops throughout the day. This is the best way to visit Egremni, which has no road access since the 2015 earthquake. Cruises typically depart around 9:30am and return by late afternoon. Booking the day before is advisable in July and August.
The cluster of small islands visible from Nidri's waterfront — Meganisi, Sparti, Madouri and Skorpios — make for an excellent day's island hopping. Meganisi is the largest and most visited, with a beautiful harbour, traditional tavernas and several outstanding swimming coves. The island has a permanent population and a genuine local atmosphere that contrasts pleasantly with the tourist-heavy main island in peak season.
One of the most authentic experiences available in Lefkada — a generational family-run organic olive oil producer in the village of Syvros, offering tastings of some of the finest olive oil in Greece, alongside local honey, olives and produce. Set high in the mountains in the centre of the island, Karya is among the most well-preserved traditional villages in the Ionian. Stone-paved squares, ancient plane trees, old kafeneions and a pace of life entirely different from the coastal resorts. The village has a small museum dedicated to the local embroidery tradition and several good places to eat. The drive through the olive groves and mountain scenery is rewarding in itself.
Lefkada has two accessible waterfall walks that make an excellent change of pace from the beach. The Nidri waterfall is the most visited — a short walk through a lush gorge leads to a series of cascades and natural pools. The Kerasia waterfalls are wilder and less visited, set deeper in the mountains and requiring more of a walk. Both are considerably cooler than the coast in summer and photogenic year-round. Waterproof footwear is advisable.
Perched on a hillside above Lefkada town, the monastery of Faneromeni is one of the most important religious sites in the Ionian islands and commands sweeping views over the lagoon, the causeway and the Greek mainland. The site dates back to the 17th century and remains an active monastery. Opening times vary seasonally — calling ahead before visiting is recommended. The viewpoint alone justifies the visit.
Lefkada town is the island's capital — a compact, characterful place with a pedestrianised centre, good restaurants, independent shops and a pleasant waterfront canal. Nidri is the main tourist hub on the east coast, with a lively harbour, watersports facilities and boat trip departures. Vasiliki on the south coast is quieter and more refined, with an excellent waterfront and several good restaurants. All three are worth at least an afternoon.
Lefkada is an exceptionally good destination for families. The combination of calm lagoon beaches, accessible watersports, boat trips and inland activities means there is genuinely something engaging for every age group throughout a holiday.
The rock formation beaches on the south-west coast offer some of the best snorkelling in the Ionian — clear water, abundant fish and interesting underwater topography. Equipment can be purchased inexpensively in Lefkada town or Nidri.

Agios Ioannis beach is one of the best windsurfing locations in the Mediterranean — a consistent breeze, calm water and several schools offering lessons from beginner to advanced. An excellent activity for older children and adults alike.
Planning note: Lefkada is compact and well connected by road. Most of the island's main attractions are within 30–40 minutes of the Agios Ioannis area. A hire car is recommended for the first visit — it makes the island significantly more accessible, particularly for reaching the west coast beaches.
